On the evening of Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Caged Warrior Championship 37, two of our youngest competitors from Next Generation Martial Arts took center stage—and left the crowd in awe.

At Next Generation Martial Arts, we prepare students for moments like this. Connor and Maverick, both just six years old, stepped into the cage under the bright lights and roaring crowd, and showed the kind of courage most adults only dream of. At an age when most kids are learning how to handle first grade, these two were learning how to manage adrenaline, emotion, and the pressure of competition—all in front of hundreds of eyes.

Facing the Crowd: The Emotional Monster

As they made their way toward the cage, Connor and Maverick faced more than just a match—they faced the emotional monster that is the crowd. With lights blinding and voices echoing, it felt as though this giant beast of energy was trying to swallow them whole. Each step closer to the cage brought them deeper into the unknown.Connor and Maverick walking toward the cage under the bright lights at CWC 37 The brightly lit octagon stood like an arena of truth—and their bodies reacted with the unmistakable signal that something important was about to happen. That sick feeling in their stomachs, often called butterflies, was fear and excitement colliding.

But that sensation wasn’t a warning to back down—it was a message: This matters. And if they met that feeling with courage, something special would happen. It wasn’t about perfect moves. It was about letting their hearts shine. It was about showing their warrior spirit.

Back-and-Forth Bravery in the Cage

From the opening bell, it was clear that this wasn’t just a friendly match. It was a real test of composure, technique, and emotional strength. The energy was electric, but Connor and Maverick didn’t flinch. They delivered an exciting back-and-forth grappling battle that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Each scramble, reversal, and takedown was met with cheers—because the crowd wasn’t just watching two kids wrestle; they were witnessing raw courage in its purest form. Adults in the audience found themselves questioning how they might respond in such a moment—under the lights, with nowhere to hide. The boys weren’t just competing—they were inspiring everyone who saw them.

At Next Generation Martial Arts, we teach that victory is measured in courage, not hardware. It wasn’t about medals. It wasn’t about trophies. It was about bravery.

Stress Inoculation Through Experience

In the middle of that cage, these boys experienced something most children never will—what it feels like to face uncertainty, fear, and public pressure—and to keep moving forward anyway. That experience is what we call stress inoculation. At Next Generation Martial Arts, we believe in helping children develop these tools early. By learning how to handle intense situations at a young age, they’re gaining skills that will serve them long beyond the mats: composure under pressure, emotional regulation, patience, and confidence.

Connor and Maverick were coached through the match with care and intention. Our goal at Next Generation Martial Arts is never to throw young students into chaos—it’s to help them grow through controlled challenges. Inside that cage, under the guidance of coaches they trust, they had the opportunity to feel the intensity of real competition—without the danger of being alone in it. What they faced wasn’t reckless. It was calculated. It was purposeful.

And most importantly—it was transformational.

The Role of Mentorship and Coaching

These moments matter. Not because they make someone “tough,” but because they teach a young person what it feels like to face something hard and not back down. That emotional muscle—the one that says “I can handle this”—was trained last night just as much as any takedown or position. And the younger it’s built, the stronger it becomes.

At Next Generation Martial Arts in Thibodaux, we aren’t just teaching technique. We’re raising young warriors. Step by step. Brick by brick. Through disciplined training, strategic competition, and the right mentorship, we are helping these kids become the type of people who stand tall when things get intense—not just in the cage, but in life.

Connor and Maverick may only be six, but they stood like giants last night. They reminded us all what martial arts is truly about: not domination, but development. Not fearlessness, but courage in the face of fear. Not winning, but rising to the occasion and giving everything you’ve got.

Looking Ahead: From White Belts to Warriors

If you want a glimpse of where their path is heading, look no further than the older boys who stepped into the cage later that night. Jack, Corbin & Ty, and Paul—each trained at Next Generation Martial Arts—demonstrated exactly what years of mat time, proper mentorship, and emotional development can produce. Calm under pressure. Skilled in execution. Composed in the face of chaos. These young men are living proof that the path works—because they’ve walked it.

Connor and Maverick are on that same journey. And their performance last night was just the beginning.

At Next Generation Martial Arts, we know this is how to build a strong youth—through challenge, growth, and guided experiences. There will be more moments like this. More young warriors rising. More stories to tell.

Stay tuned. The next generation is coming.

And they’re ready.
