Knee Shield Attacks
Half guard bottom isn't just a jiu jitsu position — it's a wrestling position too. A lot of people get comfortable playing technical guard games from the bottom, staying in these small nuanced positions and trying to work specific setups. And while that has its place, it can also keep you pinned down longer than necessary.
Sometimes the best move from the bottom is to get up. Stand in Base exists for exactly that reason — and when you stand, the wrestling begins. Your opponent will likely grab a single leg and try to wrestle you back down, and now you're in a scramble where your jiu jitsu mentality gives you the edge.
Beyond the mat, Stand in Base is also the most important thing you can do in a self defense scenario. Getting off the ground and back to your feet is always the priority when real danger is involved.
A good guard needs both. The technical half guard game keeps you safe and sets up submissions and sweeps. The wrestling capability gives you a way out when the technical game stalls. Neither one alone is enough. When you combine a wrestling mentality with a jiu jitsu mind, you become much harder to keep down — and much more dangerous from the bottom.
