Open Guard — Spider Guard Sweeps, Part 2

Spider Guard Sweeps, Part 2

What To Think About This Week

The Lesson

Two weeks ago you learned a kneeling-side sweep. This week you learned another one with the same timing. The difference between them isn't something you'll figure out by thinking about it on the sideline — it's something your hips and grips will tell you mid-roll.

The Overhead Sweep asks something different of you: patience. You're waiting for your partner to commit weight forward before you act. Resist the urge to force the lift before that weight shift happens.

Keep asking the same question from last week — what's available right now — but notice it applies before the sweep too. Reading your opponent's weight and base is the first half of the flow.

Class Rolling & Takedown Rules

How We Roll

White vs White
Flow training by default unless the instructor specifies otherwise. Build movement and good habits before competition pressure.
Upper vs Lower
Lower ranking student picks their top position. Blue through black vs white, or blue vs black — the lower rank decides where to start.
Purple / Brown / Black
Neutral start or request a specific position you want to work on. Self-directed development at this level.
Takedown Rounds
Same rules apply. White vs white — controlled and flowing. Upper vs lower — lower rank picks entry or tie-up. Purple / brown / black — neutral or requested start.
