Week 47 of 96

Half Guard Top — Backstep Pass

Backstep Pass — To Side Control, Mount, U-Hook Pass & Shoulder Lock

What To Think About This Week

The Lesson

Same lesson, new pin. The Backstep Pass is one position with four different outlets, and which one opens up depends entirely on what the bottom player does in response to losing their underhook.

If they stay calm, Side Control or Mount becomes available depending on what your trapped knee can do. If they fight to keep one side controlled, the U-Hook Pass is there. And if they panic and reach for you, the Shoulder Lock shows up almost on its own.

You're not choosing between four techniques — you're reading one reaction and letting it tell you which of the four is already open. The backstep itself is the only thing you're actively doing. Everything after that is recognition.

Class Rolling & Takedown Rules

How We Roll

White vs White
Flow training by default unless the instructor specifies otherwise. Build movement and good habits before competition pressure.
Upper vs Lower
Lower ranking student picks their top position. Blue through black vs white, or blue vs black — the lower rank decides where to start.
Purple / Brown / Black
Neutral start or request a specific position you want to work on. Self-directed development at this level.
Takedown Rounds
Same rules apply. White vs white — controlled and flowing. Upper vs lower — lower rank picks entry or tie-up. Purple / brown / black — neutral or requested start.
