Half Guard Top — Beating the Lockdown

Patience · Double-Leg Grip · The Sprawl

What To Think About This Week

The Lesson

This week is different from the last few. There's no menu of outlets to read — there's one position, one trap, and one way out: patience.

Everything in your body will want to yank that trapped leg free the moment you feel the Lockdown grip. That instinct is wrong, and it's exactly what the bottom player is hoping for — your escape attempt is what turns them to their side and gives them the recovery they're looking for.

The win here isn't a technique — it's restraint. Stay flat, stay heavy, get your grip, and let the sprawl do the work your leg can't. If patience has been a theme all month, this week is where it gets tested directly.

Class Rolling & Takedown Rules

How We Roll

White vs White
Flow training by default unless the instructor specifies otherwise. Build movement and good habits before competition pressure.
Upper vs Lower
Lower ranking student picks their top position. Blue through black vs white, or blue vs black — the lower rank decides where to start.
Purple / Brown / Black
Neutral start or request a specific position you want to work on. Self-directed development at this level.
Takedown Rounds
Same rules apply. White vs white — controlled and flowing. Upper vs lower — lower rank picks entry or tie-up. Purple / brown / black — neutral or requested start.
